Is there a glass ceiling for Americans who get hired at Japanese companies in Japan?
I once worked for a Japanese company in the US. When I asked if I could transfer to the Japan-side they told me that they only hire Japanese college graduates. They also said that only the Japanese will be promoted to upper management. This is what a worker, who is from Japan and hired in the US, told me. I want to get a job in Japan, but feel that if I do I may never reach the top.
Nope, they have a stystem and will hire only Japanese first and only hire foreigners if they need them (for special skills like language, IT, law, medicine etc.). Can you blame them really though? How many upper management or heads of cooporations do you know in the US or Europe who are foreigners? My husband tried to get a job in the US as a Japanese citizen with a green card and was turned down for pretty much everything he was qualified for. Had to take a job with a Japanese company or something very low paying. Or, he had to start his own business from scratch.
Most people I know who have worked in Japanese coorporations on the Japanese end of things often find themselves being forced into a mold they are not comfortable with..individuality looked down upon, work 12-15 hour days 6-7 days a week and never dissagree with superiors and forced to "party" every night or go on bizarre business trips for no apparent reason than to waste companies money while being separated from their families needlessly. Do you really want that kind of job? Let the Japanese college graduates have it! They have been brainwashed all their lives to accept whatever gets thrown at them without question. That is why the companies want them..and that is party why some comanies are doing well and working, and mostly why many of them are failing. Also, don`t you think a country has the right to make sure it`s qualified citizens are employed first, before they look for help elsewhere?
