When raising glasses (for a toast) why do some people tap the glass on the bar before they drink?
It's a German tradition. To make a long story short, the king was old and he couldn't hold those huge German mugs up the whole time. So it sloshed it down and it became the tradition. There is another legend that says the king feared being poisoned so you are suppose to slosh it out so that part of yours goes in mine and part of mine is in yours so we will all be poisoned together. But that doesn't make much sense to me b/c the amount in a drop or two splashing wouldn't kill you even if a huge mug would.
