Rubik's cube?
I would like to know what kind of method I should learn to solve the rubik's cube. I have mastered the beginner's method of layer-by-layer fairly well, and now I want to challenge myself with something harder. Are there any master cubists out there who could recommend something? I thought that the Heise method might be very cool, and I'm not sure I want the Fridrich's method even though I have a good memory for algorithms. Thanks.
Congratz! You are now at that ideal halfway point to become overly frustrated! Every cuber has gone through this, as have I. So, when you are feeling down, keep in mind that you are not at all alone.
In this answer, I will assume that you already know how to solve a cube. If you don’t, then go back to stage 1 =D
Let’s get started.
Firstly, you must master the beginners method. Try to combine as many moves as possible into one moves with Finger Tricks. Then, try to memorize extra algorithms to allow you to solve specific states of the cube in one step rather than two. (For example, in the last step of the solution, there are twelve states: One is the solved state, eight are the “Allan state,” or a three-edge permutation, two are “Arne,” or the cross permutation, and one is “Bert,” or the side to side permutation. Normally, one would solve the “Arne” and “Bert” states by applying the “Allan” algorithm, but this is a waste of time. Learn the Arne and the Bert – it may not look like much, but it goes a long, long way.)
Secondly, the method that you are using sucks. It just does. It uses way too many moves, resulting in your awful 5 minute time. Change it. Use the Petrus method instead. This is the method that I use, and I average about 40 seconds a solve with hardly any practice at all. The Petrus is based on simplicity and efficiency. You may have noticed that whenever you solve a cube, you solve one side first. Then, you break it up, and re-solve it. You break it up, and fix it. Break, fix, break, fix, break, fix, wasting moves and time. The Petrus method does not start with the one side, but I will not waste your valuable time trying to explain it here. Thirdly, if you want to spend a lot of effort on becoming really really fast, you need to use the Friedrich method. This is the method that most pros use, and it allows them to solve the cube in less than 20 seconds. Be warned, though, it involves 72 different algorithms and their inverses and reverses, so unless you have amazing memory or indomitable will, don’t attempt it. You are much better off using the Petrus and thinking about what you are doing rather than using the Friedrich and becoming a machine. At least, that is so in my opinion.
