How to use ready roll icing?

It's my sons' first birthday party and I found a brilliant birthday cake I'd like to attempt. It's dome shaped and decorated with bananas' ( so it looks like a pile of bananas with Monkeys popping out of it, This is brilliant for our monkey themed party, However, I'm not sure on how to work with ready roll icing, I've practised the shape of the cake- brilliant. I then figured if I premade the bananas and monkeys prior I could bake the cake and decorate it the night before the party, so, my questions are:
How long does ready roll icing last, If I make the monkey characters using the icing on Monday will they last till Saturday?
`I was thinking of using butter icing to cover the cake then add the fondont bananas to the butter icing, will that work?
Well done for attempting to make your own cake. Your ready roll icing will last as long as the "sell by" or "use by" dates on the packet. Once made up into the monkeys and bananas, they will be OK as long as they are kept in a dry place (not a steamy kitchen). Try the airing cupboard if you can make some room, and place them on a tray lined with parchment paper, and they won't stick to the tray.
Use cornflour on your hands to mould the icing, icing sugar can get a bit sticky or gritty.
Make your butter cream icing just a little stiffer than usual to make sure it will hold the decorations. and don't make them too big, or they will be too heavy for the butter icing to hold, and you will find your bananas and monkeys will slide into a heap at the bottom of the cake.
