First, to keep your hand from warming the glass and altering the flavor of the wine.
Second...and this is my own opinion and not supported by fact, but I believe it helps when swirling your glass. If case you aren't familiar with this practice you should occasionally swirl your wine or beer to release aroma and enhance enjoyment of the flavor.
