how to protect my horse's hocks from scrapes when he gets up from lying down?
My big Quarter Horse has open sores on the outsides of both hocks from scraping them as he gets up from sleeping on the rubber mats in his run-in shed. I don't use shavings, and really do not want to have to deal with bedding. I sweep the rocks and debris out everyday, but it hasn't helped. I have tried fleece-lined hock boots, but no matter how tight I tighten the velcro, they have slipped off by the next morning. I have tried stretchy neoprene men's knee braces, but the same thing. My horse seems to rub them off as he stands up. I tried cut-off tube socks, but cannot stretch them over his large hooves. Any ideas on how I can protect his legs? Thanks so much.
The problem is obviously the "rubber mats in his run-in shed." I'm sure the rubber mat on the shelter floor makes the floor easier to clean but without bedding the abrasive surface of the rubber mat is very tough on the hocks and rug-burn type sores will be unavoidable. And that abrasive bare rubber mat surface is what is peeling off his hock boots when he gets up. You should either apply bedding on the mat or remove the mat and opt for an earthen floor. An earthen floor in a run-in is best as long as the shelter is on high ground and not being swamped with run off water from higher ground which would turn the floor into a deep muddy mess and an earthen floor is so much easier on the hocks than an abrasive bare rubber mat. And an earthen floor is really easy to replace if it gets too urine soaked if you just scrape off the surface and replace it with clean fill dirt. I use my tractor end loader bucket to scrape and scoop it out and replace it with clean fill. I suggest you opt for an earthen floor and if you don't have clean fill dirt to replace it with when needed you shouldn't have much trouble buying a load and keeping a large pile on hand. I pay $8.00 a ton for a 5 ton load of clean fill dirt (clean fill dirt NOT top soil) and the excavating company I buy it from only charges $45 to deliver it.
