what is imperial portraiture?
im doing an art assignment and this is said about the artist.
Robinson first came to prominence when he won the Archibald prize in 1987 with his equestrian self-portrait. Satirising the pretensions of the Marcus Aurelius style of imperial portraiture Robinson, without reins or bridle, cuts a ridiculous figure riding off not to conquer some new territory for the Empire but rather his own private domain.
the picture is of a man on a horse, its called equestrian self-portrait by William Robinson.

Like Robinson's self portrait the emperor's horse has no reins or bridle. This staue became a model for many Equestrian statues that came later.
It is difficult to find an Imperial Equestrian portarit , ie no reins or bridles but there are certainly many paintings of famous people that show them in triumpic settings that Robinson is certainlt satrizing in his self-portrait.
One example easily found is david's , Napoleon Crossing the Alps
