How can I get information on a very old house?
My parents house, ( the house I grew up in) is extremely old, I can remember as a kid, when these people came to the house and gave my father a sign to display that said "bicentennial site" We found some pictures of the house in the attic, with a dirt road and horse-drawn carriage outside, and also some pictures of people inside the house, also very old. I would love to find out who these people were, and any information on the history of the house in general. Anyone know how I can find this info out?
Begin at your City (or Town) Hall and check the tax assessors office. there you will find help researching previous owners, and how much they paid for the house. You may be able to go back far enough to find the name of the original builder.
Once you have a few names to associate with the house, ask someone in the assessor's office if there is a local genealogy group or club. You can also try to check local church records for deaths and births in the town. the Town or county Clerk should be able to show you marriage and divorce records.
Once you have a list of names, start to check local newspaper archives for anything associated with those names. You may find a photo or two.
Put an ad in the paper asking for anyone with information on the house or it's previous occupants to call you. Take them to lunch and pick their brain.
